Topic: IP Section annual meeting & IP CLE – Convergence Without Predictability: Personal Jurisdiction Dilemma for Online Foreign Trademark Infringements in the E.U. and the U.S.

Summary: Please join us as we provide a short summary of the Intellectual Property Section’s 2022 activities and programs, and discuss ongoing issues facing the Section.

After Section announcements, speaker Gizem Demirel will give a 30-minute CLE presentation on Convergence Without Predictability: Personal Jurisdiction Dilemma for Online Foreign Trademark Infringements in the E.U. and the U.S. Online trademark infringements are ubiquitous anywhere in the world. This CLE will compare U.S. and E.U. approaches and discuss how both jurisdictions move towards the same analysis and terminology to resolve the personal jurisdiction problem for online trademark infringements. This session will focus on the current practices and share practical strategies for dealing with potential online trademark infringements in the U.S. and E.U.

Speaker: Gizem Demirel is a lawyer licensed both in Turkey and Oregon. Before moving to the U.S., she practiced for several years as a lawyer at law firms and as an in-house counsel at an international company. She has practiced various commercial transactions, including trademark infringements, information technology, licensing, and data privacy. She has publications on international sales agreements, the new arbitration arrangement at the World Trade Organization, and jurisdictional challenges of internet-based trademark infringements. Upon the invitation by the United States Department of Commerce Commercial Law Development Program, she recently traveled to Mongolia to train governmental officials in public and private partnerships projects.
