Summary: Please join Professor Sarah Burstein (Suffolk) and Professor Andrew Gilden (Willamette) as they provide an overview and update on design law, with Professor Karen Sandrik (Willamette) then moderating a discussion on how design patents, trademarks and copyrights may protect a product’s visual design and packaging.
Speakers:
Professor Sarah Burstein is a Professor of Law and the Academic Co-Director of Suffolk IP Center at Suffolk Law School. Professor Burstein’s research focuses on the intersection between art, design, and intellectual property law. She is an internationally-recognized expert in design patent law and is also known for her popular twitter account that covers all things design law. Prior to becoming a law professor, Professor Burstein worked as an intellectual property litigation associate in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP and served as a law clerk to the Honorable Robert W. Pratt in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.
Professor Andrew Gilden is an Associate Professor of Law at Willamette University College of Law. Professor Gilden’s research intellectual property and internet law, as well as legal issues concerning free speech, civil rights, gender identity and sexual orientation. Before joining Willamette University College of Law, Gilden was a Thomas C. Grey Fellow and Lecturer of Law at Stanford University where he taught social media law, intellectual property counseling, federal litigation and legal research and writing. He worked as an associate in the New York office of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, and his practice focused primarily on intellectual property and media litigation. He clerked for the Hon. Cynthia Holcomb Hall of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the Hon. Marilyn Hall Patel of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
