Are the latest AI-powered patent-drafting tools advanced enough to be useful and worth the cost? In this CLE, we will discuss 1) AI patent drafting tools (how they work, what they excel at, and
shortcomings), and 2) strategic prompt engineering techniques for patent drafting.

Speakers: Shirley Fung and Vanessa Yazicigil

Shirley Fung, a founder of Akona IP, has over 15 years of experience in patent preparation, prosecution, and strategic counseling. With a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT, Shirley specializes in AI, neural networks, machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. Her expertise extends to robotics, computing systems, medical devices, semiconductors, electronics, aerospace, and consumer products. Shirley excels at defining patent strategies, resolving invention pipeline bottlenecks, and managing patent portfolios. She is multilingual, speaking English, Cantonese, and several other languages. Shirley enjoys snowboarding, crafting, puzzles, cooking, and exploring nature.

Vanessa Yazicigil is a patent attorney at Akona IP and member of the Oregon State Bar with a background in computer engineering and a passion for emerging technologies. Vanessa specializes in patent preparation, prosecution, portfolio management, and litigation support. Her expertise includes computer architecture, computer memory and storage, and semiconductor processing technologies. Vanessa is particularly interested in the intersection of AI and intellectual property law, including the use of AI tools to enhance patent drafting workflows. She holds a J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School and a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Portland State University.
