A discussion of TTAB procedures, timing, and tips from two TTAB Interlocutory Attorneys. The presentation focuses on the pre-trial phases of TTAB opposition and cancellation proceedings, including extensions of time, pleadings, discovery, and pre-trial motions practice. The presentation will cover practical tips and strategies to successfully navigate a TTAB inter partes proceeding, including when it is appropriate or helpful to involve the TTAB Interlocutory Attorney in your proceeding.

Speakers: Katie Bukrinsky and Steven Ferrell Jr.

Katie Bukrinsky: Katie Bukrinsky has been an Interlocutory Attorney at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) of the United States Patent and Trademark Office for six years. In that role, she manages proceedings from commencement through trial, and decides pretrial motions.

Before joining the TTAB, Katie worked for ten years as a litigator at the law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP, where she represented clients in trademark cases before federal courts and the TTAB. Katie also served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at The George Washington University Law School, teaching legal writing to George Washington Law Review students.

Steven Ferrell Jr.: Steven Ferrell is an Interlocutory Attorney at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, a position he has held for nearly four years. In this role, he manages interlocutory matters in inter partes proceedings before the Board, bringing a depth of perspective shaped by nearly a decade of federal service at the USPTO.

Before joining the TTAB, Steven served for six years as a Trademark Examining Attorney, where he developed a thorough command of trademark prosecution and examination practice. During his tenure, he also completed details in the USPTO’s Petitions Office and served as an Acting Senior Attorney in a trademark law office — experiences that broadened his understanding of trademark administration and policy across the agency.
